Part 3: Money and Investing (continued)
What is Warren Buffet Doing?
Apparently, he is buying US stocks for his personal portfolio. Here’s a link to read: Buy American. I Am.
Warren is a really smart guy. His personal portfolio was in government bonds recently because he smelled that the market was due for a fall. Now he’s buying stocks again. I know I said a few posts back that I wasn’t going to do anything until I rebalanced in April, but seeing Warren invest makes me a little more bold. I asked my spouse if she would consider rebalancing early and moving more money into stocks and she almost hit me with her frying pan (it happens in real life marriages, not just in Tom and Jerry cartoons). She’s too scared to go against the grain, even though Warren is doing exactly that. Most people will not do what Warren is doing because they are scared. But he’s just following the sound principle of “Buy low, sell high.”
It’s too bad Warren didn’t send out a signal a few years ago telling us all that the market was about to dive like Greg Louganis. He must have known something or his personal portfolio would not have been 100% bonds. But he’s too smart to telegraph his moves ahead of time. I have a sneaky suspicion that he’s already done his stock buying, so if this article serves to pick the market up, he will already have his positions locked in for a nice profit.
Remember that Warren Buffett is the exception to the rule. He buys stocks, or whole companies, instead of low cost index funds. He makes big bets and times the market. Even though I tell you market timing doesn’t work, understand that my rules don’t apply to him. Warren doesn’t have an asset allocation plan that he will stick to religiously. That’s because he is really good at predicting which asset classes will do better at given times in the economic cycle. The rest of us can’t afford to try the things Warren tries. We’re not smart enough. We have to stick to the basics and not try to get fancy.
At least it’s good to know that Warren has the same opinion as I have. The world is going to continue to be a better place, and the long term trend of the markets is upward. Now is a good time to be buying stocks, because they are relatively cheap. So don’t stop investing because you got hammered. Keep following the strategy I have laid out for you and you will be a successful investor in the long run.
